Garden... me... Really?

So... where do I start? A little over a week ago, Jace and I went to Lowe's to get something... what I can't remember, but we came out with a little garden salsa kit. Jace thought it would be fun to grow plants so we can make our own salsa. Ok... I can try this.

So, last Wednesday (May 5)... Jace stayed home from school so we read the instructions, poured the soil stuff in the little container that came with the kit, added the water, put in 10 seeds of each of the three packets (Tomatoes, Cayenne Peppers and Cilantro). Then we covered the seeds with more of the soil and sprayed with water (yup sprayed, that is what the instructions said to do). So here is our soil... doesn't it look great?

Well, about 2 days later I found this in my little planter... is that really a sprout already?

Soon enough there were little sprouts like that popping out of the soil, but only on the tomato side of the planter. (see the tape, that is how I know it is the tomato side!)

Here are the tomato sprouts as of today.

This past Wednesday I noticed that the cilantro side had little sprouts too, here is the cilantro today.

I noticed this morning that the cayenne peppers have a little sprout too. Here is the "garden" this morning. We keep it in the house and take it outside for a couple hours a day.

Apparently you are suppose to transplant the little seedlings into a bigger space... this is news to me. Luckily I have some very knowledgeable friends that know how to garden. I have only ever grown...... well....... nothing! I kill everything except for the rose bushes at our old house.
This is going to be an experience. Today I went to Lowe's again and bought some bigger planters, one for each of the seedlings. It seems that there is a "correct" way to transplant them into the bigger pots, so I will be waiting until Monday when my friend Robin comes to help me transplant the seedlings into the bigger pots I bought today. We also bought cucumber and watermelon seeds. Jace really wants to plant watermelons. So we bought the stuff to make a garden in the back yard.
In the Children's Song Book there is a song about Gardens (pg 237). Here are the words.
"The prophet said to plant a garden, so that’s what we’ll do. For God has given rich brown soil, the rain and sunshine too. And if we plant the seeds just right and tend them carefully, Before we know, good things will grow to feed our family."
Hopefully this proves true for Jace and me (and our family)..... We will see how this goes... watch for more posts about our little garden!
